Mark Harniss

Mark Harniss, PhD is an Associate Professor in Rehabilitation Medicine and Associate Director of the Center for Technology and Disability Studies (CTDS). His background is in the design and development of instructional and assistive technologies for people with disabilities. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon in Special Education and a Master’s degree in Instructional Technology from Utah State University. His research focuses on knowledge translation, assistive technology and accessible design. He is PI of the Google-funded Sub-Saharan Africa Assistive Technology Mapping Project, director of the NIDILRR-funded Americans with Disabilities Act Knowledge Translation Center with lead responsibility in knowledge management and technology, and PI of a NIDILRR-funded knowledge translation grant that is focused on translating evidence about Traumatic Brain Injury to practice within the Washington State Department of Corrections. Examples of past NIDILRR-funded projects include the MSKTC (co-director), and the National Center on Accessible Information Technology (co-investigator). He has collaborated on multiple projects focused on accessible measurement in large-scale systems (e.g., PROMIS, NIH Toolbox). He also teaches disability policy in UW Disability Studies.
